Second CEEDWA Scholar joins AIRO to help shape the future of Orthopaedics
The CEEDWA Scholarship is highly regarded in the realm of higher education as it serves as a formal program that links the skills and aspirations of high potential university students with the research and development needs of forward-thinking companies in the wider Western Australian business community.
For 2023/24, the Australian Institute of Robotic Orthopaedics (AIRO) has partnered with the University of Western Australia to appoint Mr. Jake Lorkin as a CEEDWA Scholar. Jake is a final year Honours student in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science with a passion for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. He will be involved in developing an advanced system that evaluates a sensed three-dimensional joint against an implant and creates algorithms to enhance the final implant fit through laser sculpted bone surface.
"I am thrilled to be working on cutting-edge algorithms and new 3D bone sensors that can improve patient outcomes in real-world scenarios," said Jake. "Moreover, it's an incredible opportunity to be introduced to surgical robots that use lasers to sculpt bone and are being developed here in WA."
Jake will work closely with UWA Professor Thomas Braunl from the School of Engineering, Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, alongside the AIRO engineering and surgical team. "Jake's project perfectly embodies the essence of the CEEDWA program," said Professor Braunl. "His project applies innovative technology to address real-world challenges."
